15th Annual North Branch Art Trail Brochure - (893kb)

Sordoni Gallery-  Wilkes-Barre, PA

"Remembering Helen: The Sordoni at 35"

August 15 - October 5, 2008

Opening reception, Friday August 15, 5-8pm, in conjunction with

Wilkes-Barre's Third Friday celebration.

"Inspired educator, accomplished artist, patron of the arts, and

remarkable American philanthropist." This is how the "New York Times"

summed up the extraordinary life of Helen Farr Sloan in her obituary of

December 30, 2005.  Add to this profile: devoted supporter and long-time

benefactor of the Sordoni Art Gallery at Wilkes University.  This

exhibition "Remembering Helen," honors the memory and generosity of this

special friend of the Sordoni Art Gallery, nationally respected center

for the study of art named for former state senator from Northeastern

Pennsylvania, the late Andrew J. Sordoni.

"A New Paradigm: Recent Works by Ron Erhlich"

October 17 - December 12, 2008

Opening reception, Friday October 17, 5-8pm, in conjunction with

Wilkes-Barre's Third Friday celebration.

American painter Ron Ehrlich is known for achieving rich surfaces and

subtleties of tone melding the techniques of vessel-making with the

spontaneity and vitality of action painting. Working on panel, wielding

a blowtorch as well as a brush, the brilliant colorist creates an art

both vigorous and contemplative. Ehrlich's paintings are regularly

exhibited in galleries in major cities across the country including more

than 30 solo exhibitions since 1985.  In an era of globalization his

work is a unique blend of Eastern and Western techniques.

Ries Glass Studio- Tunkhannock, PA

Preeminent in the field of glass sculpture, Christopher Ries is
internationally known for creating solid, unassembled glass sculptures
unprecedented in design and size.Employing the techniques of classical reductive sculpting, Christopher Ries
hand carves massive blocks of glass to create exterior shapes by taking
material away.  His work is physically and emotionally demanding because his
sculpting must liberate a dynamic work of art from a lifeless block of
crystal.  Ries¹ work, which would have been impossible to produce or even
envision fifty years ago, is the perfect synthesis of science and artistic
vision for our time.  Bending light to his will, he creates stunning
abstract sculptures that engage the viewer on every level.  Although he
carves glass, it is almost as though he sculpts light itself.

The working studio and gallery are housed in a restored 1830¹s barn situated
along the Susquehanna River and will be open to the public in conjunction
with the 15th Annual North Branch Art Trail on  Friday, October 10,
9:00-4:00 Saturday, October 11, 9:00-4:00 Sunday, October 12, 11:00-3:00.
